Affordable SEO for small business: what’s worth paying for

How to get the most from a small SEO budget: the free wins, what’s worth paying for, and the cheap deals that cost more in the end.

Affordable SEO shouldn’t mean cheap SEO. The cheapest deals often do little, or do things that can hurt your rankings. Affordable means every dollar goes on work that helps customers find you.

Here’s where a small budget does the most good, and what to avoid.

Free wins you can do this week

Before you pay anyone, do these yourself. They cost nothing but an afternoon:

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. The right category, every service, accurate hours and real photos. Here’s how to optimise your Google Business Profile.
  2. Ask every customer for a review. A direct link makes it easy: make one with our free Google review link generator.
  3. Set up Google Search Console. It’s free, and shows which searches you appear for and any problems Google finds.
  4. Fix your page titles. Put the service and place near the start of each title. Preview them with our Google search preview tool.
  5. Match your details everywhere. Use the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google, Facebook and directories.

What’s worth paying for

Once the free wins are done, these are the jobs where an expert usually saves you time and gets better results:

  • Technical fixes: speed, mobile problems, broken pages and anything stopping Google from reading your site.
  • Service and area pages: well-planned pages for each service and the main places you work.
  • Content that answers real questions, written around what your customers actually search.
  • Ongoing Google Business Profile work: updates, photos, review requests and replies.
  • Plain-English reporting that shows calls, enquiries and the searches you’re winning, not just a ranking chart.

Red flags in cheap SEO deals

  • Guaranteed #1 rankings.Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. Anyone who does is guessing, or doing something risky.
  • Hundreds of backlinks for a low price.Bought links break Google’s spam policies and can hold your site back.
  • Long lock-in contracts.Good SEO keeps clients because it works, not because they can’t leave.
  • They own your accounts.Your website, Google Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics should all be in your business’s name.
  • Vague monthly reports. If you can’t tell what was done or what changed, ask. If the answer is still vague, that tells you something.

Questions to ask before you pay

Questions · copy into an email
  1. What exactly will you do in the first three months?
  2. Which services and suburbs will you target, and why?
  3. Will my website, Google and analytics accounts stay in my name?
  4. What will your monthly report show me?
  5. How long is the contract, and what happens if I want to stop?
  6. Can I see live websites you’ve worked on?

How to make a small budget go further

  • Start narrow. Focus on your most profitable service and the few suburbs closest to you, then expand.
  • Go local first. “Electrician Charlestown” is far easier to win than “electrician”.
  • Keep the review asks in-house. You see your customers; a quick ask at the end of each job costs nothing.
  • Fix the website before buying traffic. More visitors won’t help if the site is slow or hard to contact you from.

When it’s worth spending more

A bigger budget makes sense if you’re in a competitive industry, such as law, dental or trades in a big city, if you sell online across Australia, or if you have several locations. In those cases, more pages, more content and more link-building are usually needed to keep up.
